These seeds overwinter and germinate early Spring as the ground thaws, growing and rooting early.
Here in the Midwest, the best time to conduct dormant lawn seeding is from mid-November through early March, as long as the soil temperature remains below 50 degrees.
Here are some tips if you’d like to try this practice out this winter.
- Get your seed down and scratched in just before the ground freezes. Ideally you’ll get a snow cover shortly after, giving the seeds a safety blanket in which to remain.
- Ensure your seeds have contact with the soil (hence the ground should not be frozen yet) so they will have a chance to germinate when temps begin to warm.
